The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that about 2 in 5 Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and about 1 in 4 Canadians will die of cancer. In 2013, it is estimated that 187,600 Canadians will develop cancer and 75,500 will die of cancer. Like me, you have probably met someone or have a family member who has been diagnosed with cancer.
In 2012, a member of my family was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and spent considerable time undergoing chemotherapy at the Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton where she received remarkable care. To show our appreciation, my family and I want to give back to the Juravinski Cancer Center Foundation and are doing so through the Grow a Dream fundraiser (garden plant sale) during the Concession Street Festival in June 2014. This event has been approved by the Juravinski Cancer Center Foundation and has already been allocated a space at the Festival by the Concession Street Business Improvement Association.
My goal is to raise at least $2,500 through online donations, plant sales and raffles. All of the money raised will go towards the Juravinski Cancer Center Foundation- “Honour, Give, Transform” which provides the ability to show recognition and gratitude to a specific department for their exemplary efforts and care. My choice is to donate all money raised to a unit that needs the resources the most and that will benefit patients most.
